With the NFL Draft just two weeks away, the San Francisco 49ers hosted their annual local pro day at Levi's Stadium. The event showcased 44 players, including four veterans, all vying to impress coaches and team decision-makers and earn a roster spot. The 49ers have 10 selections in the upcoming draft.

NFL local pro days provide draft prospects with ties to the local area an opportunity to showcase their talents to team personnel. These prospects typically hail from nearby colleges or have other connections to the region where the team is based.

Terrell's Son Seeks an Opportunity

Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens attended the event to support his son, Terique Owens, a former Missouri State wide receiver.

According to ESPN statistics, the 2023 season was the younger Owens' most productive season. He amassed 28 receptions for 528 yards, averaging 18.9 yards per catch, and secured four touchdowns with the Bears. His receiving yards ranked second on the team to Raylen Sharpe, who finished with 991.

Terique Owens is realistic about his path to the NFL, telling reporters, "Honestly, I started football late, so I'm a late bloomer to this. But I see myself going as an undrafted free agent. Obviously, I've been working and obviously trying to get that opportunity to get drafted. But, like I said, I'm a late bloomer, and I've just been progressively getting better and hoping to get an opportunity to get drafted."

The 49ers were among the teams at the University of Missouri's pro day on March 22, in which Owens participated. He recorded a 40-time of 4.51 seconds, a vertical jump of 38.5 inches, and a broad jump of 10 feet, 4 inches at the event.

When asked about his father's best advice, Owens responded, "The best ability is availability. So, obviously taking care of my body, obviously staying on the field. I would say take days off, but make sure I'm doing a little bit of something every day and just getting 1 percent better every day."

Owens wasn't the only 49ers legacy in attendance. Former Washington State defensive lineman Ron Stone Jr. also worked out for the team. He is the son of former All-Pro guard Ron Stone, who played two seasons (2002-2003) with the 49ers.

Washington State pass rusher Ron Stone Jr. also gets a PFA grade from Dane. Stone, the son of former 49ers G Ron Stone, had 5 sacks, 11 TFLs last year for the Cougars.

Kellen Mond Hoping to Join Brock Purdy-Led QB Room

Quarterback Kellen Mond was among the four veterans participating in the 49ers' local pro day, hoping to convince the team to add him to a quarterback room that currently includes Brock Purdy, Joshua Dobbs, and Brandon Allen.

Chevan Cordeiro of San Jose State was the only other quarterback participating in the local pro day.

"I was just contacted by my agent a few days ago and just figured it was a good opportunity for me to come out and throw," Mond told reporters after the session. "And something I was kind of already familiar with, with the system out here, just being with [former 49ers passing game coordinator] Klint Kubiak back in my rookie year. So, a lot of the verbiage was already pretty smooth out here. But just getting another opportunity to throw is always good for me."

Kubiak was the Minnesota Vikings' offensive coordinator during Mond's rookie season.

Mond added that he hopes the tryout leads to a contract offer, but those discussions with the 49ers have yet to occur. He believes his mechanics have improved over the years and hopes the 49ers noticed that on Wednesday afternoon.

"Anytime you're able to get an opportunity and just be able to show you can pick up the playbook, you can operate, and then also be able to show accuracy, anticipation, and things like that," Mond said. "Sometimes it's a little weird. You're throwing to guys you've never thrown to before but definitely did a good job."

Mond entered the NFL in 2021 when the Minnesota Vikings made the Texas A&M product the No. 66 overall pick. The quarterback has appeared in only one game in his career, throwing three pass attempts. He spent last season on the Indianapolis Colts practice squad.

Tight ends Curtis Hodges, Hunter Kampmoyer, and Tommy Sweeney were the three other veterans who tried out.

New Coaches Make First Appearance

As expected, the 49ers' recent additions to the coaching staff were on hand for the local pro day. This includes Brandon Staley and Mick Lombardi, whose official titles haven't been finalized. Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports that new assistant linebackers coach K.J. Wright was also present for the workout.

New coaches were on hand, including new ass't LBs coach K.J. Wright, who was active in drills. SF still hasn't added an ass't d-line coach after Darryl Tapp left for Wash. Other newcomers included Brandon Staley and Mick Lombardi, whose titles still haven't been determined…
